Facial rejuvenation surgery · the deep plane variant and its costs · the assessment that decides against operating
Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.
His assessment works backwards from the recovery rather than forwards from the operation. He establishes what has descended, what has been lost and what has only changed in the skin, and only then asks whether the deeper operation would change anything the patient would notice. Where the answer is no, he says so and offers the smaller operation or a device. Where smoking is still active, he requires it to stop rather than negotiating around it, because a more extensive elevation leaves more skin dependent on its blood supply. He also tells every patient considering this variant what the nerve risk would mean for them specifically, in ordinary language, before the date is discussed at all.

The word is not the plan
Deep plane has become a label that practices attach to operations that differ from one another. What matters to a patient is not the term but what is released, what is left attached, who performs the operation, what is done if a nerve is met, and what the practice says it does not do. A consultation that answers those five questions has given you a plan. One that repeats the term has given you a brochure.
